Chapman-Beverley Mill

Digital Archive

Local History at your fingertips

Created in collaboration with the PATH Foundation, the Chapman-Beverley Digital Archive represents the Turn the Mill Around Campaign’s physical collection of artifacts and documents in an accessible digital format. Captured using macro photography and digital scanning technology, the contents of the Digital Archive are available to the public for the first time.

The Digital Archive contains nearly 2,000 individual pieces which include historic artifacts, academic whitepapers, primary sources, geological samples, and more. This exhaustive digital exhibit is designed for easy access by the general public and scholars alike, to facilitate further study and interpretation of Chapman-Beverley Mill and the Thoroughfare Gap’s history.

Artifacts

Organized by material, the Chapman-Beverley Artifact Collection is comprised of nearly two thousand individual artifact pieces.

Ranging from historic pottery fragments to musket balls and shards of milk glass, the Collection was digitized using digital macro photography and organized to facilitate further study into the history of the Mill site and its surrounding area.

Documents

The Chapman-Beverley Document Collection contains historical primary sources, academic studies, and restoration plans for the Mill site.

The Turn the Mill Around campaign published the Document Collection to provide the general public insight into the Mill’s storied history - and how the Campaign plans to preserve an indelible piece of local Virginian history.
